Cortez Branch Installs Eight Tesla Superchargers

High-speed charging infrastructure brings convenience to EV travelers and economic benefit to Cortez.

We are proud to announce that eight Tesla Superchargers have been installed at our Cortez branch.

The Tesla Superchargers offer up to 200 miles of range in just 15 minutes compared with traditional charging stations where EV owners have to wait multiple hours to charge. Many high-speed charging stations are placed along major highways and in urban areas, making it inconvenient for EV owners to travel through rural regions. The high-speed charging stations located at FSWB allow people to access Cortez and the Four Corners region in a way they couldn't before.

"The installation of these EV chargers ties directly into our commitment as a 4 Core Platinum Certified Green Business. Additionally, we are already seeing a positive economic impact in the community. I personally drive an all-electric vehicle and have noticed a substantial reduction in charging time at our site," said Kendall Dixon-Calhoun, Cortez Branch Manager.

"What's even more encouraging is the feedback I've received from other EV users charging at our station. Many have said the Tesla app is actively routing them through Cortez directly instead of alternative routes. One couple I spoke with, who regularly visit Mesa Verde, mentioned that they've traditionally stayed in Durango—but due to the charging convenience, they now plan to stay in Cortez. They also shared that several friends of theirs intend to do the same. It's truly inspiring to see the ripple effects of this initiative—strengthening our position as a leader in green practices while also helping to boost local economic activity," Dixon-Calhoun added.

Cortez has been a highly requested location for EV charging infrastructure for many years. The FSWB charging station opens new routes for EV owners to Mesa Verde National Park, the Four Corners region, and connections to Durango and beyond. The strategic location helps fill a critical gap in EV charging infrastructure in rural southwestern Colorado.

In addition to the time-saving convenience, these charging stations have a positive economic impact. Installing high-speed chargers brings additional traffic off the highway and to local businesses rather than national gas stations and travel stops along major corridors. The charging stations in Cortez provide convenient charging that encourages people to visit local businesses while they charge, bringing additional dollars to the community from drivers who previously may have bypassed the area.

“As EV infrastructure expands in our region, we can expect positive ripple effects for local businesses. Charging stations tend to bring travelers and commuters into commercial areas, giving them time to shop, dine, and explore nearby offerings. Any investment that increases access and foot traffic in our community has the potential to benefit our local economy,” said Ally Orton, Board President, Cortez Chamber of Commerce.

As a 4 Core Platinum Certified Green Business and CDFI bank, FSWB saw this installation as an opportunity to fill a critical infrastructure need while supporting local community members with EVs and creating positive economic impact in rural Colorado—core elements of the bank's mission.
